More Findings on Ginkgo for Alzheimer’s
November 20, 1998
Based on meta-analyses of four studies, Ginkgo biloba extract may enhance memory in Alzheimer’s patients. In the latest issue of the Archives of Neurology , Dr. Jeffrey Kaye of the Oregon Health Sciences University reported a three percent (two points) increase in memory and learning.
Four hundred twenty-four patients either ingested 120 to 240 milligrams of Gingko biloba or an inactive placebo for three to six months. Results were compared to an FDA-approved drug which recorded a 3-point increase in memory.
"I think this is an impetus to further study," said Dr. Neil Buckoltz, chief of the Dementias of Aging branch at the National Institute on Aging. "I don’t think you can conclude one way or another that people with Alzheimer’s should take Ginkgo, but I think it definitely indicates that there is enough there to do a larger study."
